Origins of The Prince of Wales title
and its links to Ludlow Castle
In this week’s Tea Time History Chat Live I talked about how the heir to the English and subsequently British throne, assumed the title Prince of Wales and how it links to the beautiful, now ruinous, Ludlow Castle which began with Edward IV who sent his eldest son, another Edward, there. As a young man Edward IV had known the castle, owned by his father, Richard of York, well. Indeed he fled for the continent from here following the disastrous Battle of Ludford bridge.
When Henry Tudor became Henry VII he was keen to indicate continuity and sent his eldest son, Arthur, there. Henry VIII also sent his eldest child here, Mary as ‘Princess of Wales,’ although the title was not officially conferred on her.

What being a Travel Trust Association member means for my tour guests
Creating History holidays (also the name of my company of which British History Tours is a trading name), has been my passion for a decade. I set up formally in 2014 and spent the next few years getting to grips with how to run a business, how to operate in travel, reach the people who might like to do my tours, meet suppliers and comply with the daunting amount of regulation involved in all of those things. This was also while working at a water company and raising my children.
It is said that nothing worth doing comes easy, and that has been my experience…and not one I would change!
I’ve seen the impact on people of being able to complete an experience that they thought they could only imagine. In fact, they tell me. On every tour that I have completed from 2018 - 2023, I have been humbled and gratified to hear guests say that my tour has made their dreams come true. This, I take seriously.
When I set out to create a history tour company, I had a very clear vision of what the tours would look like and a major element was that the guest could absorb themself into the experience because everything was taken care of. They would be looked in comfort and luxury, with plenty of lovely food and would have no worries about when or how to get anywhere. Add to this unique activities which couldn’t be accessed any other way, and something very special is created!
Behind every smooth running tour is months and months of careful planning and meticulous tour management. The furiously paddling legs beneath the gliding swan, if you will.
Operating in the travel industry brings with it unique regulations, designed to keep travellers protected from any tour company failing. Not only is it morally correct to protect your customers’ money until they have received their tour, it’s a legal requirement. Up until now British History Tours have satisfied this requirement with Financial Failure Protection Cover.
I am very pleased to announce that History Holidays Limited (British History Tours) is now a member of the Travel Trust Association and from our September 2024 tours onward, all guests are covered by this new protection arrangement.
Being a member of the Travel Trade Association is going to enable us to offer more and more to our guests, as well as continue providing reassurance that they are dealing with a reputable, professional tour company.
Here’s to the future and creating more and more life enhancing historic experiences!
