Dear Fellow History Lover!
As I write this I am sat, rather nervously if truth be told, in the Writer’s Room at the Gloucester History Festival! I have been a supporter of the festival for a number of years and was delighted to be invited as a VIP for this year’s festival. I will shortly be attending the first of fours talks which I will be enjoying over the weekend, on the front row! Some of the speakers I have met before, some not.
The majority of the festival has coincided with our final tour of the season, but I am glad to be able to make the final weekend. How could I miss seeing Gareth Russell, whose company I only parted yesterday as we completed the tour on which he was tour historian, in conversation with Tracy Borman who speaks regularly on my tours, about Hampton Court Palace? Both Gareth and Tracy will also be speaking at this Autumn’s Online History Festival: The Tudors (Click Here for Tickets)
The talks are taking place in one of Gloucester’s monastic ruins, Blackfriars. You can read more about the history of this incredible building by clicking here.

2023 Tour Season in Review
Another incredibly successful tour season, our second post ‘C-word', is now concluded and now we are looking forward to 2024 and beyond! The tour calendar for 2024 is available to view on www.BritishHistoryTours.com and we will be working furiously on the 2025 calendar over this winter. Expect new and exciting tours which will make up a varied calendar including explorations into the Stuart and Roman eras as well as our ever popular The Anne Boleyn Tour - email office@britishhistorytours.com to get on the waiting list.
Gareth Russell, has been our tour historian on all of our tours this year. Gareth shares his knowledge with wit, humour and energy. I am honoured to say that Gareth is also Tour Historian with me next year on The Anne Boleyn Tour (both!) and The Rise of the Tudors.
The Anne Boleyn Tour - May
Our annual The Anne Boleyn Tour took our group through the events of 1536 and the downfall of Anne and the men caught up in the tragic events which led to their executions. We were based at Hever Castle, with exclusive use of the Astor Wing built by William Waldorf Astor to entertain and host guests including Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, better known to us as Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother.
This tour is so popular that we will be running it twice next year. The May Anne Boleyn Tour is sold out but there are a few spaces left for the ‘April’ one which runs from 30th April - 4th May and will include a visit to the Tower of London on the 2nd May, the day on which Anne was brought to the Tower by barge from Greenwich, a prisoner never to leave its walls.
For more details or to book The Anne Boleyn Tour, 30th April - 4th May now - Click Here.
The Private Life of Anne Boleyn - June
The Private Life of Anne Boleyn Tour took a different look at Anne’s life allowing us to delve into her life, heritage and impact on 16th century England. We visited Sudeley Castle, Hailes Abbey, Tewkesbury Abbey, Gloucester Cathedral, Acton Court (rarely opened to the public), Berkeley Castle and Hever Castle.
This was the last opportunity to take this tour for the foreseeable future but it may be back in the future is there is enough demand. We keep our offering fresh and exciting by creating new and exciting tours each year. So, if you see one you want, be one of the 20 people who get to do it!
The Elizabeth I and Mary, Queen of Scots Tour - September

The Elizabeth I and Mary, Queen of Scots Tour included visits to Kenilworth Castle, Lord Leycester Hospital, Harvington Hall, Tutbury Castle, Peterborough Cathedral, Hever Castle, and Westminster Abbey and we enjoyed talks from Gareth Russell, performances from Lesley Smith as Elizabeth I and Mary, Queen of Scots and private access to 4 of our venues as well as 5 expert guided tours.
This is another tour may be back in 2026!
Gareth’s talks will be made available over the coming months in the British History Patreon club - join for £5 per month, click here.
