I was contemplating doing one from behind the scenes once I got back, when the unglamorous and more time-consuming part of the job takes over once again. My team and I are now head down in the minutia of arrangements for September’s ‘The Catherine Howard Tour’ the first of its kind devoted to the life of Henry VIII’s fifth, Queen Catherine Howard, for which we’ll once again be joined by Gareth Russell, author of the acclaimed Catherine Howard biography, Young and Damned and Fair. As we re-trace the route of Catherine and Henry VIII’s tour of the North in 1541, Gareth will be giving exclusive talks covering Catherine’s life from her childhood to her zenith as England’s queen. What went wrong? And how did this tour mark the beginning of the end?
Due to unforeseen circumstances, I have a few spaces available on The Catherine Howard Tour. Bookings for this tour have to close on Tuesday 3rd June so if you’re interested please take a look at the website for full details of the tour and how to book.
Henry V by Dan Jones
’ biography of Henry V tells a very different story to the playboy turned pious warrior king tale familiar to us all, not least thanks to Shakespeare who, to be fair, had his eye on writing a plot line not an accurate history. By focussing the majority of his biography of Henry V on his life before he was king, Dan introduces us to a serious youth, keen on books and music who, with one eye always on the practical, observes the reigns of his cousin Richard II and his father Henry IV, and learns lessons which he will put into practice later on.I’m looking forward to discussing this book in Book Club, on Sunday 6th July. Book Club takes place online so you can join from wherever you are in the world. You just need to be a member of my Patreon, ‘British History’. Click here for more details.
