How to get 10% off Tudor Places magazine, an exclusive blog about the Scottish Crown Jewels and ask historian Helen Carr a question
Before we get going on that, thank you to everyone who took part in the poll last week asking whose tomb I was standing in front of. Here are the results…
I was standing in the Beauchamp Chapel within St Mary’s Church, Warwick. So, it was a reasonable guess to say the Earl of Warwick but the correct answer was Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester. Robert’s father had been the Earl of Warwick before being elevated to the Dukedom of Northumberland at which point the title went to his elder brothers in turn.
The Podcast is Back!
The first episode is my interview with the brilliant Dr Estelle Paranque about two female figures of power of the 16th Century, Elizabeth I and Catherine de Medici. Our chat was based on Estelle’s new book, ‘Blood, Fire & Gold’, a dual-biography of the two Queens.
You can expect more historian interviews on the Podcast as I add brand new ones but also upload the 15 or so which are currently available on my YouTube channel.

Estelle Paranque will be speaking on ‘The Elizabeth I and Mary, Queen of Scots’ Tour in September 2023!
Estelle will be joining us at Hever Castle, on the final night of The Elizabeth I and Mary, Queen of Scots Tour in September 2023! Join this tour by visiting the webpage to download the booking forms. Spaces are limited in order to honour our Small Group Guarantee. Your booking is also covered by our Financial Protection Insurance. (Please, whoever you go on tour with, even if it’s not us, make sure they state clearly how your money is insured in case of their business closing! It is a legal requirement which unfortunately some companies, even well-known ones, try to avoid.)
Online History Festival - The Stuart Summit
While I was listening to the talks from Dr Joanne Paul and Dr Estelle Paranque, during the Warwick Words History Festival, I couldn’t help but feel extremely grateful for the ability and opportunity to see these historians talk. Now, although there is no substitute for in-person events it is fantastic that we can create a very close second option now, with technology that allows us to host events online.
The Stuart Summit, which takes place online from 18th - 20th November, is our first Online History Festival. There are a number of benefits with it being online:
if you can’t make the talks as they are released, you can watch them later. In fact, you can watch them as many times as you like until 31st January 2023!
you can take part wherever you are in the world!
you pay the equivalent price of one in-person talk for six talks, a live speaker panel, a fun Quiz and entry into a prize-draw!
Please click here to head to the event page to find out more and to buy your ticket! If you are quick you may just grab an Early Bird Ticket.
If you are a member of the British History Patreon you can access tickets at a 10% discount. Join for just £5 per month - visit www.patreon.com/BritishHistory
As well as a discount for The Stuart Summit Online History Festival, and for Tudor Places magazine (see below), patrons will also receive this month’s exclusive blog about the incredible story of the Honours of Scotland, otherwise known as the Scottish Crowl Jewels. How they escaped destruction by Cromwell (the fate of the English Crown Jewels) is quite extraordinary! Not only that but next week I will be asking Patrons to submit their questions for Helen Carr, the author of a brilliant biography of John of Gaunt, called ‘The Red Prince’. I will be interviewing Helen at the beginning of next month and the interview will be available later this year.
There is also 12 months of exclusive content in the library for new, ad existing Patrons to enjoy. Join now for just £5 per month. there is a 10% discount for yearly subscriptions) - Click Here.
Thursday Tea Time History Chat Live
This week we covered:
Books to give you a new, fresh and insightful look into the world of the Tudor monarchs, more about the Stuart Summit online history festival and the treasures to be found in a less-well-known destination in Worcester
Next week I will be in sunny (I hope!) Portugal and so I will see you again for my weekly live show on Thursday 27th October at 1pm (UK time).
Visiting Tudor Britain
This week it was my tune to host and lead the discussion in the weekly ‘Visiting Tudor Britain’ half-hour live stream on Instagram which I do alongside Deb Roil, editor of Tudor Places magazine and Sarah Morris, The Tudor Travel Guide.
I spoke about the Priory of St Mary’s, Kenilworth, also known as Kenilworth Priory or Abbey (it was raised in status in the 15th century) and St Nicholas’ Church which was the parish church adjacent to the priory and where Elizabeth I came to worship when she stayed at Kenilworth Castle.
