Hello Fellow History Lover,

The Parish Church of St George, Dunster, has a history going back almost 1000 years. In the 1090’s the Norman Lord of Dunster, William de Mohun, gave the Bath Abbey a large area of land, two fisheries and the tithes of some of his other manors also (Picture 2 is of the Tithe Barn, still standing but recently restored for use as a community hall).

The church was dutifully built, as per their agreement, and a small priory operates here consisting of a small number of monks, perhaps 5. Small parts of the Norman Church survive, most notably the North door (although it’s not a design I have seen elsewhere).
